- great, many thanks,
the reason was the wrong version of qcOSC.
kind regards - Hi Philippe,
i testet it several times with different options.
- on different computers.
- only the qcOSC Patch in the composition with no other patches inside.- with other ports in the qcOSC Patch. It does not matter which port I set in the qcOSC patch. It always appears the error message in Millumin.
kind regards - Hi,
today i tried the idea from above with an automatic follow spot with a Kinect, Synapse and QuartzComposer.
This both parts running smooth so far.
If i would like to integrate that Quartz Composition into Millumin, Millumin gives me the following message:'Error opening socket on specified port. Please choose a different port.'
Sometimes i get that composition to run, and sometimes not.If it works, it's great.Perhaps some OSC data could be involved? That composition runs also without OSC activated.
kind regardsCitizenCaine - Hi KLGene,
use the BlackMagic devices. They have the best latency for camera and powerpoint feeds. For the 4:3 ratio, crop the left and right sides of the input inside Millumin.
kind regards
CitizenCaine - Hi franzschuier,
yes indeed, it is a big bug of the actual drivers of blackmagic. On the other hand, they are telling, the devices recognizing the colorspaces automatically. In reality they do not.
There are several ways as a solution:- Downgrade to older drivers, as you did it.- Use converters from HDMI to SDI from blackmagic.
In my way, i found a perfect solution also to have a convenience monitor for speakers on the podium:
- I´m using the Lightware MX8x8 HDCP-Pro Matrix- every laptop or computer that will be captured is connected to the inputs of the matrix.- outputs of the matrix are connected to every input of the existing Blackmagic capture devices.- one output of the matrix to the convenience monitor. So I can route any connected computer to the convenience monitor.- one great thing of the matrix is, it can convert the colorspace from RGB to YUV and everything is ok ;)- Besides, I have totally comfortable EDID Management of the matrix.- A bad thing here, the matrix it is extremely expensive.
kind regards
CitizenCaine - Hi at all,
I have a innovative idea for Millumin. To possibly to give the Kinect2MaskSyphon project more priority. This would also be a unique feature compared to all other professional products on the market.
First, the problem, imagine the following:
- The customer wants to have a large-covered backdrop for his stage.- This is covered in the rule several times so that it is opaque.- The highest-related material is generally printed! What is usually very expensive because the recessed screen surfaces also run through the printing press and will be charged.- The canvas is cut and it is a rear projection screen installed. Due to the fact that with this, the speaker is not illuminated by the projector. This is also known to be better for the camera image.
Now the solution:
- A complete-covered backdrop without the necessary canvas cutouts.- The use of a Kinect2MaskSyphon on the stage area to give the speakers a followspot.
Arguments for our customers would be the following:
- No necessarily expensive prints are longer necessary.- No presentation would be projected on the speakers in a front projection.- For the White Balance of the cameras, the followspot of kinect can be set in any colour in Millumin ;).
However, I also have problems with the kinect. On the MacBook Pro, it works flawlessly. On the MacPro I also have the horizontal and vertical lines. The move to more pixels does not really help here.
With Synapse I do not know how I could get the input signal in Millumin?
How would the principle function with an infrared camera? - Hi mano,
the following link explains the options to connect the monitors:https://support.apple.com/kb/HT5918?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US - Hi mano,
Try it with your new graphic card, this one is powerful. You will see. Tell us later how it went.
On my new MacPro I would do it with a Triple Head 2Go. Since I got there the need that two Thunderbolt outputs are for the monitors for the stage direction. On this computer you can indeed connect up to six monitors. However, the connections must be in Thunderbolt version. :-' But my Director monitors have DVI ports. And from these ports I can only use up to a maximum of two to this computer, unfortunately.
So don´t forget your director monitors to connect. - There are even now several proposals. The first of several instances of Millumin is very good and budget friendly but under conditions performance hungry.
At my suggestion, you'd have lend a signal-distributor. Under certain circumstances, even these small projectors have integrated corrections.
Try it on all cases before. Since you have low-light projectors and a very large area to play on. The soil also absorbs a lot of light. Due to the strong projection angle much blur will arise. - @vbaudron & @mano, you could adjust the huge keystone correction with millumin anyway. for the finer adjustment between the three projectors you could use the keystone correction in the projector itself. If it is for example a larger Panasonic projector, such projectors have built in a very nice fine Keystone correction. Just an idea.
- Hi mano,
Another option would be to distribute the signal to a distributor. Like that way..
greetings
CitizenCaine - welcome
- Hi olgv,
as i know, it´s not possible via Millumin.Maybe you could try Twixtor for After Effect.Apparently the best PlugIn for timestretching.Altough After Effect is able to do some timestreching itself, but its not so accurate as Twixtor.

CitizenCaine - Hi Philippe,
my pleasure!
Super would be a native integration of Epiphan cards.Since these Epiphan cards would offer proper computer and not only video resolutions. You can connect with these cards even analog RGBHV signals. When a customer arrives with an older computer then I or we would be able to also connect this computer without any converters.
By the way, great is that 'keep Hot' function for the Epiphan cards in Millumin, that the Blackmagic cards do not offer.
The Blackmagic cards have already been the best performance in capturing of devices in video resolutions. My opinion. I do not know how other people's opinions in this regard would be.
Epiphan would also offer a free SDK on their website for download.http://www.epiphan.com/support/?pid=217

CitizenCaine - Hi,
now I did several measurements within my prospects.
The configuration consists of a MacPro with the following momentary expansion -> 3,7 GHz 4-Core Intel Xeon E5 - AMD Fire Pro D700 GPUs; 512 GB PCIe Flash Memory; 16GB 1866MHz DDR3 RAM.
In the respective external enclosures (Echo Express SEII) are two DeckLink Mini Recorder and two Epiphan DVI2PCI Pro cards installed. The external enclosures are connected to two different Thunderbolt buses of the MacPro.
A MacBook Pro with 720p 60 is connected to one of the Decklink cards. Another MacBook Pro with 1024x768 60Hz is connected to the Epiphan DVI2PCI cards. To represent a classical presentation environment in 4/3.
In another configuration, a AJA IO XT and an UltraStudio 4k are connected. The AJA is connected in chain after the UltraStudio. I wanted to connect all the devices together. There was recognition problems between connected DeckLink-, Epiphan cards, UltraStudio and AJA IO XT. Millumin did not recognize all together. The best configuration I will definitely have to find out. Anyway...
Here are the results:
Epiphan DVI2PCI Pro; 5to7 Frames latency; 166,67 - 233,33 msDeckLink Mini Recorder; 4 Frames latency; 133,33 msAJA IO XT; 5 Frames latency; 166,67 ms
and the winner is...
Ultrastudio 4k; 3 Frames latency; 100ms
see for yourself at the images attached: - Hi SorenBcn,
unfortunately i cannot give you a detailed answer about the latency of the Epiphan DVI2PCI cards. I can bring them with capturing at 60 fps. This cards are great for the job with Millumin, but some problems with two cards together i´m mentioned above. I want to make another test with these cards when I have time for this again. Since these cards are the best solution for Profesional solutions in my eyes and are fully OSX compatible about their Quicktime integration. The Ultrastudio 4k and the Decklink MiniRecorder are indeed more performant and snappy about Millumins native support of Blackmagic devices but do not supports real computer resolutions. It's also a little more complex since they come from the video area and thereby also only supporting video resolutions.
If i have time in June, i will make measurements with the different configs and latency and i´m going to post it here in the forum for all.
I´m not able to provide it faster, because in the next two - three weeks I´m on different Jobs and I do not have time for this.

CitizenCaine - Hi,
tested the following configs with a MacPro 2013, OSX 10.9.2.
Millumin works with the Sonnet Express SE II TB2 with the Blackmagic Decklink MiniRecorder like a charm.Tested it with the HDMI Input with 720p 60. In my eyes the best solution for a cost effective solution
Millumin with Sonnet Express SE II TB2 works also with the Epiphan DVI2PCI Pro. See the appropriate Thread here in the forum.
Millumin with the Ultrastudio 4k -> best performance with the HDMI or SDI Input with 1080p 60! Best solution when low latency is important. For example, in a camera input when it comes to lip sync. Doesn´t recognize the right RGB color space for computer in my eyes. Compared with the AJA IO XT. Easy to check with gray graduated color bars in the recorded signal.
Millumin with AJA IO XT -> good performance, recognizes the right RGB color space.

CitizenCaine - Update:
now i´m able to capture with epiphans own software completely stutter free. It was a setting in the software that Restrict the refresh rate.
But unfortunately I have no settings in Millumin, except the 'keep hot' setting. :(Sometimes Millumin crashes.
These cards would fit perfectly in a professional environment.

CitizenCaine - Info to all,
Well, I tried the appropriate capture cards DVI2PCIe Pro of Epiphan. I have them removed from the VGA Grid, which they have in their product portfolio, because there the corresponding cards are installed.
I installed two of them in an expansion chassis from Sonnet (Sonnet Express SE II Thunderbolt 2).I installed their drivers and software. OSX and their software recognizes the built-in cards in the Sonnet expansion chassis properly.
In system preferences the system settings of Epiphan allow me only adjust a maximum of 30fps.However, the technical specification on their web page of the Epiphan DVI2PCIe Pro shows a recording with 60fps.
Small microstuttering occur in the capturing and recording with 30fps. The performance of the capturing cards are not sufficent enough. I wrote a e-mail to the support of epiphan and waiting for a response for a solution.
I´ve tried their capture Software (VGA2USB) and in Millumin on various Apple computers. A MacBook Pro 2,7Ghz, MacPro late 2013 all with OS 10.9.2 on it.
Here in my studio still around a new Blackmagic Ultrastudio 4k Thunderbolt2 and a AJA IO XT. Both devices do here completely smooth recording with the HDMI Input.
It would be nice to get a smotth capturing with these cards. Since they really offer a rich variety of computer resolutions. And it would be possible to have VGA and DVI to connect with a screw.

CitizenCaine - Hi Matt,
yes, i´m able to capture a MacBook Pro with it.The Ultrastudio 4k automaticly recognize the input in rgb colorspace. You have use only the correct cables. You may not adapt in between if you have no signal.
regards
Daniel - Hi fusion,
try the 9.9.3 driver.Had also some problems with the actual drivers 10.0. and 10.1. with the Ultrastudio 4k TB2.
BestDaniel - Hi Jorge,
your question about this card was quite interesting.Did your tried that card or other solutions already?
For myself, i´m searching for solutions for several VGA or DVI inputs from computer into Millumin. The Blackmagic devices are good for camera and video device inputs.
For computer inputs, I would rather prefer a capture card, which can deal with the computer resolutions and color space of the computer.
greets
CitizenCaine - Thanks for the reply.
It seems to have been a misunderstanding. The Aja IO XT and Ultra Studio 4k work reliably. The latency of the AJA IO XT, however, as you mentioned above.
Deltacast and Datapath here would certainly variants which would be welcome. I will make in the near future a proposal in UserVoice.
regards
Citizen Caine - I found a solution for the Ultrastudio 4k. To use a cheap MiniDisplayport to HDMI cable from the bay helps. Without any adapter between. The Desktop Video Software 10.0. doesn't helps. It´s buggy. The input signal is indeed displayed on the internal monitor by the Ultrastudio 4k but not captured. A downgrade of the software to 9.9.3d helps here.
The answer from Blackmagic was following:The Ultrastudio 4k will detect RGB over HDMI. However it will automatically convert it to YUV on input.

- Hello Judgeworks,
Where did you get this link ?
We removed the manual in 2013, since it was outdated. So there is no more manual.
Everything is now in the tutorials section.
Best. Philippe - click on some link that said manual. Have been doing so much research on other things right now not sure where the link to manual was. If I run across again I will let you know.
I'm struggling with some info per dashboard vs composition & cues (see question I posted in another thread).
Thanks
k - Curious as to why no manual? The videos are helpful, but far from comprehensive. And they take a lot longer to get info from than a written technical document would. Plus harder to navigate.
- Hello @jamesboo,
Sorry, we choosed not to maintain a manual, but rather to be focused on improving Millumin and publishing tutorials (mainly videos, so people can see the manipulations).
There are pros and cons I understand, but this is the choice that have been made. However, next version of the tutorial page will include contextual search, so easier to navigate.
Best. Philippe - edited January 2016Dear Philippe & Folks,
I've checked already the vidoeclips that are accessible online; I can understand the choice you've made to not publish a manual but for the beginners it's very difficult to get a sense on how to build a project with Millumin. There's many things and concepts to be considered.
There is two weeks now that I'm trying to experiment and learn by myself and I feel cheap.. Do all the people in this Forum becomed pros by themselves? Why I'm not able to even figure out how to make a project sel-running for my installation?
It would be very usefull if it be possible to download a small project that is using the basics ( as how to start as auto-pilot when opened). This file project could use the main functionalities of your software with some comments in it - you can even make a duplicate of one that you've already made for your needs.
Cordially.
j. - Hello @jocool,
Have you followed the 'learn Millumin in 7 steps' from About's popup ?
Have you followed our official tutorials
? For example, the first one will show you how to create a simple
mapping (mapping-tool and slice-editor). The other will show you how to
use the dashboard, the timeline, ..
Since they are mostly video tutorials, it's quite easy to see the manipulation to achieve the goal.
After all this, if you have a question, please send us an email. We'll be please to answer you.
Best. Philippe - edited January 2016Hello Philippe,
I've started by reading all the posts on Milumin Forum's to check if something was relevant for my search.. and of course several posts give me some nice cues.. now I'm in the process of re-doing all the video tutorials one by one including 'learn Millumin in 7 steps'.
I am also quiet confusing between Millumin 1 and Millumin 2 - I need to check for the differences between the two.. and for example, does Arduino Events Triggering are available on both (I plan to use Arduino and Max MSP on a separate computer if I have trouble to master Millumin for the moment) - Do you think version 1 should be enough for my project right know (does it is easier to learn and master? which one requires my efforts).
I hope after that to be able to build my installation. It's a project that will be made in a window of an Art Center in Montreal and called 'Une curieuse vitrine' (a curious window). I don't have the pretention to copy 'Mecanique discursive' but it's the project that influence me most for my set-up.
I'll let u know of this project.. and by the way if you have a contact in Montreal who master Millumin2, I'll be interested to contact him or her.. (I've already make a post at this intention on the Facebook Group Montreal's VJs).
Thank you for helping such a Newbie.. Warm regards.
j. - Hello @jocool,
Concerning Arduino : we eased a lot the process of working with them in Millumin 2 (see this video). Just buy an Arduino Uno and some sensor to start playing with them.
Via MilluPlug, you can use Arduino with Millumin V1 : but it's limited to only one input/output, and it still require to upload some code in the Arduino.
Lastly, we redesigned our help-center, and there is a beginner tutorial here.
We'll add more tutorials along the next months, including one for Arduino.
Best. Philippe
